Web standards and accessibility conference

Added on Thursday 10 Jun 2004

As reported on GAWDS - Web Essentials '04, Web standards and accessibility conference

Here is the press release:

University of Technology, Sydney, Australia Thursday September 30 and Friday October 1 2004

Sydney will be the focus of the web development world when it hosts the world's first developer-focussed web standards conference this September. Bringing together some of the biggest international names in web development and accessibility - Joe Clark, Dave Shea and Doug Bowman - Web Essentials 04 aims to break new ground in inspiring web developers, designers and decision-makers to embrace web standards.

The two-day conference also features Australian pioneers in web accessibility, design and coding Russ Weakley, John Allsopp, Bruce Macguire (the man who sued SOCOG over website accessibility), Roger Hudson, David Woodbridge and more. Over 300 delegates are expected from Australia and around the world.

"Today many websites are failing to meet basic World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards" said conference co-convenor and web standards champion John Allsopp. "In the absence of standards, websites are more expensive to run, less effective for users and are vulnerable to legal action."

Russ Weakley adds "despite the high profile standards based relaunches of major sites such as http://www.smh.com.au many web developers are only now beginning to understand the importance of these issues. To remain relevant and 'in the game', web designers, developers and decision makers must understand the fundamental standards and practices developed by the W3C, which ensure the web remains and becomes increasingly world wide."

Web Essentials '04 will be hosted at Sydney's University of Technology from Thursday September 30 to Friday October 1.

Registration is on-line or by phone on 1300 666 770.
